Academic Trainee Programme

Through 2020, lab.Bode is supporting twenty-three research assistants in the field of education and outreach. German Museums were invited to apply, which had collections primarily dedicated to art, wished to place greater value on outreach, and were offering a trainee position in education and outreach for the first time in conjunction with the programme.

The activities of the trainee program and the education laboratory are closely linked. All trainees take part in a comprehensive educational programme developed in cooperation with the Bundesakademie für Kulturelle Bildung in Wolfenbüttel. The trainees work at their respective museums, observe and assist with individual school projects at the Bode-Museum for a period of time, and then develop a format of their own at their given institution. For the development and realization of their own outreach project, trainees are given a budget of up to 5,000 euro. In cooperation with the project team of the Bode-Museum, trainees also test working in interdisciplinary teams and build professional networks in the process. In terms of its structure and pay scale, the trainee programme is based on the initiative Vorbildliches Volontariat and the recommendations of the German Museums Association (“Leitfaden für das wissenschaftliche Volontariat,” Berlin 2009). Participating museums contribute 30 percent of the trainee’s salary and also guarantee the trainee a workspace, consistent, content-based supervision by a mentor, and the effective integration of the trainee’s activities into the working processes of the institution. The German Museums Association is the cooperation partner of the training program.
