Set #7: Outreach

Outreach – Consequences – Courage

Christian Greco, Museo Egizio, Torino

Christian Greco: Outreach - Consequences - Courage

Christian Greco, director of the Museo Egizio in Torino since 2014, has set in motion a wide outreach programme. He directed projects at audiences as diverse as children in hospitals, prison inmates, and the local Arabic-speaking community. The latter program made him a target of the alt-right.  In his lecture, Christian Greco will discuss how some of his museum’s outreach projects were developed together with their intended audiences and what lessons the museum learned from them.  The talk will also consider how museums can respond to an increasingly populist discourse and thus contribute to maintaining an open and tolerant society.

Christian Greco managed the refurbishment of the museum building and a renovation of its galleries, completed in 2015. Trained mainly in the Netherlands, he is an Egyptologist with vast experience working in museums. He curated many exhibitions and curatorial projects in the Netherlands, Japan, Finland, Spain and Scotland.  As the head of the Museo Egizio, he has set up important international collaborations with museums, universities and research institutes across the world. He is currently teaching courses in the material culture of ancient Egypt and museology at different universities.
